It was my honor to make the illustrations for a second Sean B. Carroll book! A Series of Fortunate Events: Chance and the Making of the Planet, Life, and You is about the enormous role of randomness in forming the reality we experience today. I realize this might be a terrible thing for a visual communicator to say, but, I highly recommend the audiobook! Sean reads it himself, and has a familiarity with the words like only the author could. The book is funny and entertaining, while also tackling serious questions like, why do some people get cancer?
I made many illustrations for this book, but my favorites were reformatting the bird phylogeny from the literature, the graph of brain sizes, and the diagrams explaining the central dogma. The image I'm showing here is a cartoon I drew of a crested pigeon that we did not wind up using for the book.
